Caleb's 7th Birthday

We celebrated Caleb's 7th birthday a few weeks ago and had a great time. We don't really do parties in our family. Instead we do something special together as a family that the birthday child enjoys. This year for Caleb's birthday we went to see the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus "Dragons." The boys were sooooooooo excited when they found out we were going to the circus! And even more so when they found out it was about dragons! We had a great night at the circus (Eden was a little too young to stay up so late or sit still so we let her stay home and go to bed!). I loved watching the boys' faces throughout the show. They were mesmerized. We got there early for a pre-show and got to walk around on the circus floor and see the clowns and elephants up close. The boys got clown noses and temporary tattoos. Our seats were really good and we were able to see everything very well. What a great 7th birthday surprise it was!

Then the weekend of Caleb's actual birthday, Nana ,PawPaw, Grammy and Pop-Pop came to celebrate with us. And Grammy and Pop-Pop brought a great surprise with them: Hayden! We had lunch at Chick-fil-a,. the kids played, Caleb opened presents, we had cake and then we went to the Children's Museum (at Hayden and Caleb's request). This year, Caleb requested an Optimus Prime birthday cake (WHAT?!?!?). So after extensive research, I decided to go with the frozen buttercream transfer method and tried to find an Optimus Prime that wasn't too detailed. The cake turned out pretty great.

And then Caleb got his birthday wish. This kid has been dying for it to snow. And he was so bummed that Hayden couldn't spend the night. Well, to our very great surprise and his very great delight- it snowed.... a lot! (at least a lot for South Carolina). The forecast called for a few wet flurries so no one was worried or in a hurry to leave. Grammy, Pop and Hayden left about 4:00 and ended up turning around after they ran into a very dense snow storm! They were snowed in. So not only did Caleb get to play in the snow on his birthday but he got to do it with his best friend, Hayden.

Spinet Desk

If you read this blog and live in Rock Hill, or if you are planning to visit soon, you need to check out a store on Main Street called Flutterby Interiors. My friend, Danielle, and I happened upon it one day in December. Sherri, the owner, repurposes hidden gems into new awesome things. She refinishes old furniture, reupholsters chairs, rewires lamps, creates new things from random items. It is an awesome store! And she teaches classes, too. You must check it out!

When Danielle and I visited the store in December, there was a really neat desk on display. It had a "Sold" sign on it, but I thought it was so neat. It was a 19th century Spinet Desk. I thought it would be a perfect desk for me. It closes up to look like a nice table, but opens up to become a desk. All of your desk mess is hidden inside. I sent Jack back to take a look at it because I hoped he would make one for me. It was already gone when he went back, but Sherri shared a picture she had of it.

Jack started searching for spinet desks online and saw pictures of lots of different styles, but no plans. But my husband, being so super awesome, thought he could design one for me. I used my Christmas money from his parents to buy the materials a few weeks ago and the desk is finished. I LOVE IT! It is absolutely beautiful. It holds all of my desk stuff, plus my laptop. Jack even drilled a hole in the back for the laptop chord so that it can be closed up inside the desk, too. Here are pictures of my beautiful new spinet desk. How super talented is my husband?!?!

To My Dear Oldest Son

Happy 7th Birthday, Caleb! How did the past 7 years go by so fast? What a precious gift you are to us. I'll never forget the day you were born. Seeing your sweet face for the first time. The way your Daddy cried everytime he looked at you. And now here we are 7 years later and you are growing up so fast.

Caleb, you are growing into such a confident, smart young man. You are reading so well and excelling in everything you do in school. I am so proud of you and I love being your teacher. I love our time together, especially on Mondays and Wednesdays when your brothers are at preschool and we get to have some great conversations. I love talking about Jesus with you. I love watching you understand the Word of God and I love watching it change you. You are a leader. Your brothers follow you, but so do random kids on the playground. I love your imagination. You come up with great games and imaginary characters. You are a chatterbox! But I guess you come by that honestly. I love, I mean absolutely love, listening to you and Noah talking in the backseat of the van while we drive down the road. You guys make each other giggle and giggle and it is the most awesome sound. And I love the way you treat Eden. You are so very sweet with her. You adore her, that much is clear to everyone who sees you two together. You love to help her, maker her laugh and watch out for her. She calls you Bubby. I love it. And you are a great big brother to Josiah, too. He loves when you read to him and when you let him sit and watch you play your Leapster games.

Caleb, your Daddy and I feel so very blessed that you are our son. We love you so much and we are so proud of the way you are growing up. We pray that your love for Jesus will continue to grow and that you will follow Him with all of your heart. We pray that you will grow into a man who leads people to Jesus. We already pray for the woman who you will marry and pray that she will be a woman dedicated to Christ. We can already see the way that God is working in your heart. You are sweet, funny, smart and passionate. We pray God will use all of these wonderful attributes for His glory.

Happy 7th Birthday Caleb-Bear! We love you more!!!!!!!!!!!
